Swelling

Swelling may occur following your surgical procedure and may typically increase 2-3 days after the procedure. To minimize the swelling, place an ice pack over the outside cheek area for 5 minutes ON and 10 minutes OFF. Continue using ice for 2-3 days following the procedure as often as possible. Warm compresses can be used after 48 hours to help reduce swelling.

Bleeding

A small amount of bleeding is normal. If excessive or continuous bleeding occurs:

  • A little blood in your saliva during the first 24 hours after surgery is normal.
  • Apply moistened gauze or tea bag to the immediate area with moderate pressure for 10 minutes; repeat if necessary.
  • The use of a palatal stent is sometimes recommended for patient’s receiving gingival grafts. Please use the stent for the first 48 hours following surgery and then at your comfort.
  • Please call the doctor if you feel the bleeding is excessive.

Dressing

The dressing (which acts as a bandage) is used to protect the surgical site and help reduce discomfort.  Please DO NOT remove the dressing as sutures can become incorporated in the dressing. If the dressing becomes dislodged, it does not need to be replaced before your next scheduled post op appointment.

Diet

Until comfortable, avoid chewing on the side where surgery was completed. Avoid hot foods and liquids for approximately 1 hour following the surgery so as not to soften the dressing. A soft diet is recommended.
Eat foods easily eaten such as:
  • cottage cheese
  • oatmeal
  • soup
  • eggs
  • yogurt
  • pasta
  • mashed potatoes
  • casseroles
  • fruits

Remember, adequate nutrition is essential for feeling better as well as for healing.

Exercise

Please refrain from exercise for the first 48 hours following your surgical procedure.

Smoking/Vaping

Smoking/vaping is detrimental to the healing process. Therefore, it is critical that you avoid smoking for at least 24 hours following surgery, and it is recommended that you refrain from smoking until healing is complete.

Rinsing

Do not rinse for the first 24 hours. After that, you may gently rinse using a mild, diluted mouthwash or warm salt water. Repeat as necessary to help keep the dressing clean.

Brushing

After the first day, you may very carefully and gently brush the exposed parts of the teeth with a soft, manual toothbrush. Please avoid contact with surgical sites and refrain from the use of an electric toothbrush until further directed.

Suture Removal

Sutures or “stitches” need to be left in place until they dissolve on their own or are removed. Do not play with them or pull them if they bother you. Do not stretch your lip or cheek to view them; doing so may tear the sutures and harm the surgical site.
